Hi.

(Pls say if I’m only allowed one problem per post)

I’ve been using Sketchup Make for around 6 weeks and I have 2 problems (see attachment)

  1. The underside of my models remain stubbornly open
  2. I can’t remove Load Errors pop-up (present since I unsuccessfully tried to downloadan extension
Oh and 3, my large tool set “floats” i.e. it wont snap on to my project page

Diagonal beams, problems with rotation/flipping and trimming

Hi,

new user here, been through as many tutorials as I could find, but now that I’m finally drawing something I’m running into problems. I’m trying to build a stand for a spooling system using a bunch of 2x4 framing lumber (1.5" x 3.5" actual). I’m having a few difficulties:

  1. imagine I have a frame like in the pic below and I need to put a beam diagonally, what’s the best way of doing it? right now I ended up creating an angle guide with the protractor, drawing a 2x4 and rotating it to follow that guide. I then moved it by 0.75 down so that the center of the beam was centered with the guide. This seems quite complicated, wondering if there’s a simpler way.

  1. with that side structure done I move-copied it and then tried to add two beams across to connect the two frames. After drawing the first top cross beam I copied it and moved it below and then tried to flip it so that it would form an X with the top beam, but it wouldn’t flip. These are all groups. Both flipping from the model or while editing the group does nothing, on any of the axes. What am I missing? I could rotate it, but it seems that flipping should work and would be more accurate.

  1. last but not least, intersection and trimming. I’ve read that intersections happen “in the same context”, so trying to intersect groups won’t put the intersection lines on the objects in the group. I’ve tried to practice with two simple cubes and it works, 2 groups, I explode one, intersect, cleanup, regroup the trimmed object I exploded. However I can’t get this to work trying to clean up the diagonal beam. All the 4 pieces of the frame and the diagonal beam are objects. As you can see the vertical lines are not places so cleaning up deletes the faces, I have to pull the object out/add some lines, and then I can trim it. Any idea why that’s happening?

thanks for all your help,

Spike

Group vs Component: File Size Comparison

@jarvis393 wrote:

I have a question about the weight of 3D warehouse objects.
I recently downloaded a lot of accouterments to include in my model but the file got so huge it was unmanageable.

I typically download the components into a temporary file then explode everything until there is nothing left to explode. I then group the object and bring it into the model I am working with. I follow this protocol so that my component and layers list doesn’t get completely cluttered.

MY QUESTION is: Does it make a difference to file size if the object that ends up displaying on my screen is a group or a component?

Revisit chamfer or bevel with follow me

I am referencing Chamfer or Fillet a hole in an object
and in particular the follow me tool video.

I think I followed the description but I am not getting the desired effect. It is leaving a gap in the bevel.
If you just select the top circle and then follow tool on the arc you can see what happens.
Please check my file maybe someone can see my mistake.
I also have the other round edge tool but just cannot figure it out.
Thanks

Using hidden geometry

I’ve put together a decent hull for my current project, an old sailboat. In the process of taming the all-curves geometry, I’ve started really paying attention to the regularity of the subjacent lattice (mesh?) that appears when fluidity of form starts emerging, and have built a volume that could solve my planking intentions for said hull…
Is there a script out there that could spare me the task of joining 1,400 vertices by hand, and the damage inflicted to the smoothness of the curves by the line tool?
I’m not quite done with the pattern yet, but am pretty confident that it can be whipped into shape, then used to its full extent, and showcased by an extension that shows desirable, but normally hidden, portions of the construction’s underpinnings…
If the tool exists, what’s it called?

Best way to push pull / extrude a non-coplanar surface? (e.g. hip roof)

Please refer to the following screen shots in my question below:

Struggling to find the best way to give thickness to this flat surface hip roof - Figure A

So that it looks like Figure B (obviously I’ve achieved it in the end, but only by manually drawing every single edge with the line tool!)

The built in Push Pull tools works great, except it leaves these ridges - Figure C

Tried using the extension Joint Push Pull. This works well and gets rid of the ridge issues by extruding as a single surface. However, it is not extruded perpendicular to the exposed front edges, so I cannot extrude out to form the roof lip in the same plane as the roof (it sticks out a bit more horizontally as shown Figure D). The built-in Push Pull above didn’t have this issue.

Finally there is the gaps in the four corners of the roof after extracting the overhang (not too bothered about this, as fairly easy to heal manually).

Surely there must be simple way to extract a non-coplanar surface like this to give it thickness without having ridges to heal? Sorry if I’ve missed something, new to Sketchup and on a learning curve…

I’ve recently purchased the SketchUp Shop version (web version) as I’m building 3D images that I want to import into Google Earth Pro for a street event I am operating. So far I have created a few images in SketchUp Shop and now I need to export just the physical 3D image and import it into Google Earth Pro (desktop version). Any help with this would be great.

The goal is to showcase the street event and all the activation’s that will be taking place.

Thanks in advance!

I just built a pc with AMD 2400g apu on a asrok AB350 Pro4 board with 8gigs of ddr4 3200mhz ram. The main purpose for this build is to do regular daily tasks with occasional AutoCad and light 3D modeling .
however, when i start up google sketchup , it says the program can not run and need discrete gfx units. now i understand the build has no gpu but shouldn’t the apu at least be able to run sketchup ?
any one know any fix to this issue? i am on a very tight budget and cant really afford something like a rx550 or 1050 right now .
I have updated the bios to latest version. Installed all required drivers and software for the apu to
work . Ryzen master and latetest Chipset and latest radeon adrenalin softwear . What am i missing here?

Hello,
I tried Sketchup Free online with Chrome and I encounter a bug where I get a large left pane (certainly the top menu) and which causes the toolbars to be very small and unusable.

I can say that only occurs with chrome and works well with FireFox.

Selection Tool leaving a "trail" since Mac OSX 10.13.4

@Gus_Goad wrote:

Hi, Have been using SU for years and recently downloaded a trial version of LightUp and the new Mac OSX 10.13.4 update.
The selection tool now leaves a trail of dotted squares across the screen.
The guides also move when drawing - like a stream of dots marching along the lines. It’s very disconcerting and distracting and starts to make the eyes go a bit funny after a while.
I’ve been in touch with LightUp and they say that SketchUp is unaffected by their software (however I had an extraordinary amount of crashes while trying to get it to work).
I have now uninstalled LU but the dot problem is still there - any ideas please?

Have seen the other posts on this topic but still can’t get this to work! When opening Sketchup pop up says there is one extension to be installed. Click on Update says installed and then says Failed to Update. The extension manager shows only that the Trimble Connect needs to be managed so assume it is something to do with that. Tried signing out, closing programme signing in and it still pops up. Can anyone please give me the idiots guide to sorting it out?

[FR] Tweaking zoom speed in parallel projection

$

@eneroth3 wrote:

Currently the mouse wheel in parallel projection zoom by a factor of 0.9 or 1.1 per step. This means that zooming in one step and then out one step doesn’t take you back to the previous zoom level (0.9:1.1 ≠ 1.0). The mismatch gets more noticeable the more steps in and out you take and can make it difficult to re-create previous views or create a series of matching scenes.

I suggest tweaking these zoom values to make one the inverse of the other, e.g. to 0.9 and 1.1111111. The difference to what is is now would be so small it isn’t noticeable, other than how it allows you to go back to the exact same zoom level you were at before. No slowdown or acceleration would be perceived by the user.

While at it, if the values where set to (1/2)^(1/8) and 2^(1/8) (0.9170040432046712 and 1.0905077326652577 respectively) 8 steps on the mouse wheel would exactly double or half the zoom. This is how the zoom works in various other programs.

While this would be a very subtle change it would make SketchUp more predictable and therefore easier to use. This would make zooming “just work” in cases where it currently doesn’t. In my view these more or less subtle details that makes the program “just work” without the user having to think about it is what makes SketchUp special.
