use to work with pro 2016, never had problem .
downloaded pro 2017, and I can’t send my sketch to lay out ( the lay out icon is fade)
and the same in ‘‘file- send to lay out’’ also fade.

Lay out is working only if I copy - paste my sketch
ant than I have only one choice of style, in purple.

thank you

Can Use Some Advice for my 1st Project! This roof is so hard!

@leemac wrote:

Hello! I am extremely new here and a very new SketchUp learner. Only about a month so far and I just love it. I am dreaming about geometry! I am not sure if this is the right category to post my question but figured one of you guys could help me.

I am trying to create a replica of my father’s house with the ultimate goal of importing it into UE4 where I will create the scene of the lake terrain and mountains behind. Not for any other purpose than what a better way to learn all these skills and hopes of being involved in some form of game or virtual reality project in the future. As a female in my 40’s I am not sure how I fit into this community?

I picked my father’s house as I can visualize it very well and thought it would be a good start! All I have are images of the blueprints (very bad ones) and one measurement that I could make out for the overall length of the building which I am using to reference as best I can. I realize this won’t be to scale.

From what I understand, for the kind of texturing I want to add it would be easier to use Maya or ZBrush to apply the textures and bump maps and create the UV’s. Many people seem to use 3dx max as it is apparently similar and has an uploader to UE4 which would save a step however I just really enjoyed learning SketchUp and feel that it would be such a great tool for creating modular components as well and a skill that I can use in different ways and worth the extra import. Unless I can do all of this with SketchUp and just don’t know that yet! lol

I am struggling with the roof. In particular I don’t know how to close the gap between the two levels. Is this done with the roof layer or the outside wall layer? In the actual house picture it looks like the outside walls continue in, but when I created the roof I found a way to close it up by bringing it down. I am so confused! Any advice would be so appreciated.

Also - if you see anything else that I am doing horribly wrong it would be so helpful. I am learning this alone in the universe right now so any feedback, advice or direction would be so welcomed! Also it may be easier to share the .skp file? How do people do that here, I tried and it said file too large…

Thanks in advance for any input!

How to fix uneven surface that comes from manually added line?

@cocoatouchg wrote:

This is my third time ask questions here, well, I did tried, I tried a few projects, doing work like trim a curved surfaces. It feels good when start, but with the repair area more and more, draw more lines connect to another drawn lines

Finally, the curved part looks terrible. not smooth at all

So I want to hear some advices,
When you modifying or fixing a surface, such as grinding a part of it or insert other thing in the middle
What I always do is put in another shape as cut tool or I just want insert another shape, then click intersect faces

Boom! it becomes messy, fix these broken faces or unexpected curve take me a lot time to do it, and besides the result isn’t good

  1. Is this a common practice? Is there another different way to do it?

I was wondering build a exactly same curved surface, so doing fixing work by use that, but it seems a bit difficult, especially some curved surfaces are tortuous.

Here is a example I am looking for way to fix it:

The top of the box that crossed the line is what I added, there used to have a groove there, so I want fill that up. Very obvious there is only one line inside the box below, and doesn’t even have line in box of left side

This is what looks like after I try to fix it with soften and smooth function from entity Info, This is not flat, isn’t it?

I tried this shape, which is little better, but still uneven, can never looks smooth as below box, and i cannot remove any line anymore

if I spend a lot to fix every faces that before and after, what i do is remove every curved lines, curved faces, reconnect them. this is not work for complex circle, and may cause continuous problems

  1. Is there a tool or trick help to doing this kind work?

  2. When i import an STL model into SketchUp, produced a lot of holes on the surface of the model, most of them aren’t bad holes (for describe hole which cannot make a surface unless add extra angle), they are good holes (for describe hole which already have correct edge and angle, just need a snap with “Line” tool, don’t need add any extra lines), is there a quick way to do it? its over thousands

example pic:
oo

Love you guys, and grateful for any answering, its very precious for me who work alone, i am not always taking help, i have little bit open source projects, and I like help others too if my knowledge is enough

I am working on SketchUp Pro 2017, Macos

Troubles adding a floor to my building

@facepalm93 wrote:

Hi all, this is my first time using sketchup and whilst using tutorials made it quite easy for me to create a layout of the main floor, I’m having troubles trying to add the first floor over it.
When I’m drawing a surface on the top of what I already have it doesn’t mark everything that’s on the inside. Which is fine in the way that I can add the other rooms manually. When I do that though it seemingly looks okay but when later on I am trying to delete the lines from the top floor it also deletes the part of the wall connected to this line downstairs. From what I have seen in the tutorials that shouldn’t be happening. I tried pulling it up, locating it on a different layer etc. yet, there is still the same problem. Furthermore when I hide the top floor layer it seems to be hiding the top of the walls downstairs as well, like in the pic below.

Thank you in advance and sorry if it seems like a basic issue but I have run out of ideas of what to try or google to fix it and I’m stuck.

Wrong dimensions

@do.iznemoglosti wrote:

Ok guys, I have a problem. I select rectangle tool, like I always did, draw a rectangle of some dimensions, then i enter desired dimensions. Until now, that worked perfect, but, when I installed SketchUp on mz fresh installed win 10, the values are wrong. It looks like this:
step1- select tool
step2- draw rectangle
step3- enter dimensions
step4- use tape measure tool and check
conclusion: the dimensions are wrong. tape measure is correct, because the rectangle I draw also looks wrong.
hope someone will be able to tell me what went wrong.
thanks :slight_smile:

Adding faces to arcs

Move an object to absolute position

@crankshaft wrote:

Hi;

Please take a look at the image, I would like to know how I can position an object precisely to a dimension / position on another object with reference to the axes.

I know that I can use the arrow key to lock the axes, and that I can type in a dimension to move, but how can I move the inverted L in the attached image to an exact position 4.5mm from the edge of the second object which is on the axes without moving the object at all in any other axes.

Basically, I want to shift it backwards in the x axis until it’s right edge is 4.5mm from the main objects left edge, but I don’t want to shift it in the Y or Z axes ?

I am a newbie and although I am able to quite easily grasp the other tools, I am really struggling to get to grips with accurate positioning of one object in relation to another :frowning:

Exported .obj file is different from sketchup object

Hmm, I was quite pleased and thought I had successfully created my first item, but when I export it to .obj file for 3d printing on 3dhubs.com, the result is quite different with diagonal cut outs along the walls instead of the solid walls I thought I had created :frowning:

Any idea what may be the cause ?

Funny thing is 3dhubs says the item has no height and it’s calculated dimensions are: 72.0 × 0.0 × 48.0 mm

Blending radius in a shallow blind hole

@crankshaft wrote:

I think the title is correct and apologies for the attached image where i have added anotation lines to trey and show what I am trying to achieve.

I have a blind slot, that needs to have a blending radius instead of a sharp angle back to the top surface, as per the red arc lines that I have done my best to show in the image.

As soon as I use the radius tool and snap it to the red axis, it seems to want to draw a perfect radius and never to the 2 points that I want it to, I guess this must be the wrong tool to do this ?

How do you use Components for Framing

$

@kbranch wrote:

Greetings - I am curious about how you recommend approaching a project with components. If you are framing a house with 2x6 walls for instance, and you will be using 2x6 by 10’ lengths in actual construction, do you start with a component of 2x6x10’, even though you will be cutting a lot of lengths shorter than 10’ (for jack studs, headers, etc.)? If you start with a 2x6x10 component you would then have to make a lot of unique components from this 2x6x10. How do you approach this?
